MUST-HAVE BABY PRODUCTS:
1. Frida Mom Ultimate Kit for Labor, Delivery and Postpartum (15pc)
Frida is such a great company, and they know exactly what women need. They have created this convenient little prep kit which includes everything you need to be prepared for labor and delivery, and postnatal recovery after giving birth. It comes with a comfortable gown and warm socks (so you don’t have to wear that paper-thin hospital gown), an upside-down peri bottle, disposable postpartum underwear, cooling maxi pads and pad liners, pain-relieving perineal healing foam, and even a sleek travel bag to keep it all organized when heading to the hospital or birthing center.
2. The Mini Version of the Frida Mom Labor and Delivery Kit (11pc)
This kit includes the absolute essentials. It only includes the disposable postpartum underwear, the cooling maxi pads and pad liners, as well as the perineal healing foam. It’s half the price as the original kit, but doesn’t include the peri bottle, which in my opinion should be considered absolutely essential. The good news is it can be purchased separately here!
3. Moms On Call 0-6 Months Parenting Book
Although nothing replaces the power of keenly tuning in to your baby’s rhythms, parenting books can be super supportive and helpful. There are tons of parenting books out there, and I’ve managed to find the ultimate guide. Moms on Call is super easy to follow and cuts to the chase. Like with all parenting advice, just apply what works best for you and your family. With that said, I strongly suggest following the “sleep guide” to the T. I swear this is the ANSWER to how to get your baby to SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT. My son started sleeping 11 hours solid starting at 11 weeks old. Despite being exclusively breastfed, he never even woke up to nurse at night. He has slept 11-12 hours every single night since then, and he is now 16 months old. I give 100% credit to this book.
4. Organic Red Raspberry Leaf Tea
Okay, so this is for Mama before baby makes their debut. This tea is the purest quality for the lowest price. I only had 6 hours of labor with my first child, and I definitely thank red raspberry leaf tea for that. What are the benefits of red raspberry leaf tea?
- Tones uterine muscles: shorter and less painful labor, especially the second stage (pushing)
- Improves strength of amniotic sac
- Helps balance postpartum hormones
- Helps bring in milk for many women
- Rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, containing vitamin C, E and A, a variety of B vitamins, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and phosphorus. It also contains essential trace minerals such as zinc, iron, chromium and manganese.
5. Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit
I cannot rave about this product enough! I swear they should hire me as their official spokesperson. This thing is truly magic, an absolute game changer. You’ll probably be swaddling your baby in the beginning, but at some point they will want to break free from the swaddle, but still can’t control those flailing reflexes that wake them up in the middle of the night. And trust me, as a sleep deprived parent, you will want ANYTHING that keeps your baby sound asleep. This sleepsuit is perfect for transitioning out of the swaddle up until the baby starts turning over.
6. Baby Ddrops 400 IU Vitamin D for Baby
Not a fun item for a registry, but it’s a must. Vitamin D supplementation is essential for your baby, and this brand is really high quality and super easy to use. I just drop one drop into my baby’s mouth every morning. He loves the drop and thinks it is a fun game. Now when he hears me ask “are you ready for your vitamin?” he giggles and leans his head back with his mouth open. I’ve got him trained 😉
7. Infant Optics DXR-8 Baby Monitor
This is the monitor I use and I love it. It is simple, reliable and affordable. Best advice I can give about choosing a monitor is to NOT choose a wifi-based monitor. There are many reasons people recommend against them, and for the sake of keeping this article concise, I won’t go into further detail.
8. Nose Frida Snot Sucker
This product has adopted the name “The Booger Suction” in our bilingual household, and our baby actually loves it! “Oooh but it’s so gross!” No it’s not. Newborns can’t breathe out of their mouths when their noses are stuffy, so you definitely want to make sure you get all those boogers out.
9. Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter
Another product for Mom! Traditional lanolin didn’t work for my sore, cracked, suffering nipples when I was beginning to breastfeed. I also didn’t like the idea of my baby ingesting petroleum-based lanolin. Earth Mama Nipple Butter was my savior. It is 100% USDA Certified Organic, made with herbs and ethically sourced organic beeswax that’s been gathered in a bee-centric manner. It contains NO petroleum, parabens, or lanolin, so there’s no need to wash it off before nursing.
10. Thena Sitz Bath
This organic sitz bath is voted “the best” one out there and is designed especially for women who just gave birth. The healing ingredients speed up recovery from vaginal tears, episiotomies, stitches, inflammation, hemorrhoids, constipation, muscle fatigue, and pretty much any other trauma resulting from giving birth.
11. Velcro Swaddles
There are lots of brands out there that basically make the same product. I liked the SwaddleMe brand, but I’m sure there are other good ones. I will say, I also tried the Halo sleepsack swaddle, and I found it to be too much fabric, too much velcro, and it just didn’t seem to fit right. However! The regular Halo sleepsack wearable blanket is legit. That’s where the baby’s arms are free, and it was really useful for us. Anyway, for SWADDLING purposes in the early months, the velcro swaddles are just so much easier to manage than the old-school large muslin swaddling cloths.
12. White Noise Sound Machine
This little gem puts a baby right to sleep, almost like hypnosis, and KEEPS them asleep. The steady white noise softens loud and unexpected sounds that would otherwise wake the baby up in a scared, screaming frenzy. While living in Santiago, Chile, we heard sirens, thumping bass from reggaeton clubs and incessant barking from street dogs all night long. We also dealt with the whole city banging pots and pans out of their windows for months on end during the recent civil unrest. Even though my husband and I didn’t get much rest, our baby slept totally undisturbed thanks to this genius device.
13. Elvie Wearable Breast Pump
*Check with your insurance provider to see if they cover the cost of a breast pump, as most do! Ok this is the most amazing item on the list, and a true “MUST-HAVE”. This genius breast pump is worn inside a standard nursing bra, making it truly hands-free. It’s totally silent, and even detects let-down and switches from stimulation mode to expression mode on its own. There are no tubes or battery packs to get tangled or weigh you down either. This is seriously the way all pumps should be designed. Even though the price may be steep, it is worth every. single. penny.
14. Medela Freestyle Flex Double Electric Breast Pump
This is the best non-wearable breast pump because it suctions so similarly to the way a baby does, and it is much more efficient than the other options out there. It is portable, has long battery life, has adjustable suction strengths, weighs less than a pound, has a reliable closed-system design, and is super easy to clean. Medela is a very trustworthy company, and if you ever need replacement parts you can find them almost anywhere. I wear a hands-free pumping bra when I pump which allows me to walk around, cook, or do work while pumping. True testament to the fact that women are great multitaskers 😉
